Sunnycroft

I was fortunate to visit Sunnycroft on a beautiful day in early June that matched the property's name. It is now only open on a very limited basis and you do need to book a guided visit. Our guide, Jean, was excellent; very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the property which is modest in size but well worth a visit. There are examples of interesting needlework connected with the last owner who was one of the people involved in making Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation Robe. The house was built in 1880 and most of the original features and much of the original contents remain.

I was pleased to be able to see that the Victorian greenhouse/glasshouse/garden room is now fully restored, partly with the aid of funding contributed by our National Trust Group.

Unfortunately, there is no longer a tea room at Sunnycroft so there is no chance of a National Trust scone. I am sure Sarah Merker, who made headlines by visiting 244 National Trust Properties (all that serve scones), would be most disappointed. It is sad that the National Trust has decided to downgrade the status of this property and allow only limited access and reduced facilities.

Members of the committee work with local properties to find out their specific needs before we suggest donating money.

We welcome suggestions to fund specific projects from members well in advance of the AGM so that the committee can follow up the suggestion. Previous donations can be viewed here.
