COACH TRIP TO CROFT CASTLE

The latest coach outing this year on 4 September was to Croft Castle near Leominster in Herefordshire. The weather was not promising when we set out in heavy rain but by the time we arrived it was quite pleasant and we did not have any rain during our visit.

The castle was destroyed during the Civil War and had to be surrendered by the Croft family, who were supporters of the King, to the Parliamentarians. It was later rebuilt as a mansion and although it looks like a castle it was not rebuilt with defence in mind. It has windows! It was sold in the 18C when the Croft family had financial problems but bought back by Lady Croft in 1923. Much of the furniture dates to the early 20C and three of our members can be seen relaxing during their visit (see photo). It is not an austere castle but one that can be imagined as a large family home.

Outdoors there is a large walled garden which contains a vineyard and an orchard. The garden, like most this year, had suffered from the prolonged hot, dry weather. It has an interesting collection of apple trees and it certainly looked as if there would be a good grape harvest so it should be a good year for wine production. The main drive to the castle had a border containing a mass of miniature cyclamen.

The small church of St Michael is situated very close to the castle. It dates from the 14C and still has box pews from the 17C. The most interesting memorial is the tomb of Richard and Eleanor Croft. Richard died in 1509.

I am sure everyone visited the tea room at some time during their visit and in some cases, such as the author of this article, more than once! It was an interesting and enjoyable day. Thank you to those involved in organising the visit and we look forward to next year’s programme of coach outings.
